Sánchez had every reason to believe he would be a City player this season
As Alexis Sánchez arrives at the Etihad Stadium tomorrow, his imagination will no doubt wander and he will start to think what might have been.
Had things gone differently on transfer deadline day, he would be walking through the Tunnel Club lounges, high-fiving the Manchester City fans, rather than entering the Colin Bell Stand through the far less glamorous service tunnel that links the outside of the stadium to the away dressing room.
In the final hours of August 31, City and Arsenal officials became embroiled in an undignified spat as they blamed each other for the collapse of Sánchez’s transfer.
A £60 million fee had been agreed — £55 million up front, with another £5 million in add-ons — but the deal fell through.
